Better fonts for design AND development

Print Friendly

Just wanted to post a quick note on something I ran across. There is a new online web hosted font directory call Brick. Very comparable to Google Fonts, but with a very distinct difference. Well, a couple of them.

First, the library is new, so there are not as many fonts to choose from yet.

HOWEVER, the quality for online use is night and day! Take a look at this comparison:

Using the EB Garamond font, here are links to 2 pages. One uses the Google version, the other the Brick version:

Google: http://brick.im/preview/google.html

Brick: http://brick.im/preview/brick.html

Notice the quality of how the brick version renders! The Q for example… awesome! Turns out that Google does modify and compress the fonts, which is why certain fonts, while they may look great in Photoshop, don’t look so great when used online.

So why do I share this? Well, if you are looking for a font for your design, take a look and see if something in the Brick library will work first. If it does, there is a good chance it will look much more like your design when the site is actually developed.

Hope that helps!
